Insecure western teenage boys don't want to play as a cute rabbit thing that talks in adorable gibberish. Since video games had been marketed in the west as "for boys" since the NES, they had destroyed the market for something like this. In this environment, western marketers had no idea how to handle a property like Klonoa. There was stuff like Spyro the Dragon, which was great, but even then they had to slather him in 90s 'tude to make him palatable. Nintendo had the niche on family-friendly titles and cute stuff, which contributed to its getting absolutely buried by the Playstation. Video games were marketed almost exclusively to teenage boys, and at the time they were into stuff like Jackass. It was the mid 90s and XTREME ATTITUDE was all over pop culture. Gotta keep in mind that during the PSX era video games were in a different place. Literally the only reason that it’s nowhere near as famous as any mainstream game is due to its terrible marketing when they advertised it for the West.
